Because so many kids across the UK need Maths tutors, we’ve put together a list of the top questions that parents ask us when they’re on the lookout. Read on for everything you need to know to find the perfect Maths tutor for your child.

  1. Why get a maths tutor?
  2. Do I need a Maths tutor?
  3. Do Maths tutors help?
  4. How do I find a Maths tutor
  5. How much do Maths tutors charge?
  6. How much is a GCSE Maths tutor?
  7. How much is an A Level Maths tutor?

1. Why get a maths tutor?

There are lots of reasons why you might want to find a Maths tutor for your child. If they find it hard to keep up with the pace of classroom teaching, and if they’ve fallen behind at all, their tutor can guide them through each topic step-by-step until they get it. Lessons are always geared to how your child learns too, so they can make fast progress as a result.

Especially in the lead-up to GCSE, A Level and IB exams, as stress creeps up on your teen their tutor can help by working out a study plan with them. Especially with tutors who are at university or recently graduated, they can be in a perfect position to pass along advice from their own recent exam experiences.

Even if your child loves Maths and doesn’t struggle with it, one-to-one tuition can be their secret weapon to help them excel even further. If they’re interested in studying Maths, Physics or Engineering at university, tutors can be perfect role models to motivate them. As well as helping with homework and revision, those with the right experience can also offer university application advice when the time is right.

2. Do I need a maths tutor?

If you’re unsure about whether your child needs a tutor or not, the best thing is to have a chat with them about it. You can also discuss it with their teacher to get a clear feel for how they’re doing and where they might need some more help.

If you’re unsure how your child would respond to tuition, it’s worth arranging a trial session so you and your child can meet a tutor. This is a great way to get a feel for how weekly lessons would work, and your teen can talk to the tutor about what they’d go over each week too.

3. Do Maths tutors help?

Short answer: yes! At MyTutor, we’ve found that our students improve by an average of a whole grade (often more) in just a term’s worth of lessons. As well as that, 80% have told us that one-to-one lessons made them feel more confident in their studies. If you find a tutor who your child gets on well with, and who is an expert in the subject, the focus of one-to-one learning is one of the most effective ways to help them achieve their potential.

4. How do I find a Maths tutor?

Finding a tutor is simple. If you use an online platform, just search for the subject, level and price range you need, see which tutor you’d like to try, and then message them to arrange a first meeting. After that, if they’re a good match with your child, you can then work out a weekly slot (or more) for your lessons.

You can also find tutors through word-of-mouth, if any of your child’s friends have had a good tutor who they recommend. Their school may also know of some good tutors who could help your child.

When looking for a tutor, a good rule of thumb is to find someone two education levels more advanced than what they’ll be teaching. So for an A Level Maths tutor, for example, it’s best to find someone at least in their second year at university studying Maths, if not beyond.

They should have all the paperwork (exam certificates etc) to verify this too. The good thing about using a platform such as MyTutor is that we check all our tutors’ paperwork when they sign up with us, so you don’t need to.

5. How much do Maths tutors charge?

Tutoring prices in the UK vary lots, from as little as £10/hour to more than £100 in some places. At the lowest end, you could find an unverified tutor who has put an ad on Gumtree. When prices are in the triple figures, by contrast, the tutor is often a qualified teacher, tutoring mainly in central London.

Because online tuition doesn’t require anyone to travel, the time and money saved means that lessons cost less than average. Our prices for Maths tutors, and all other subjects go from £18 to £40 per hour.

6. How much is a GCSE maths tutor?

The average price for a GCSE tutor in the UK is £32, but prices range from £10/hour up to more than £50 and even £100/hour.

Tutors generally increase their prices in relation to how highly educated they are (whether to Undergraduate, Masters or PhD level), and then also how experienced they are as a tutor. Often, qualified teachers work as part-time or full-time tutors, and they are able to charge more because of their experience. Examiners or retired examiners have also typically worked as higher end tutors.

University students and recent graduates can make excellent tutors. Because they’re closer in age to kids at GCSE level, they can be much more relatable and good at empathising with what teens are going through. As they have sat school exams in the past few years, they’re up-to-date with curriculums and pass on their exam techniques to their students. They tend to charge less than average too, and prices for student tutors go from around £18/hour.

7. How much is an A-Level maths tutor?

The average price for an A Level tutor in the UK is £36. This is a bit more than a GCSE tutor as it requires the tutor to have a higher level of Maths education themselves.

If you go for online tutoring, you’ll find that the tutor can charge less, as no-one needs to use their time or money travelling to and from the lesson. This is a convenient and affordable way to get a top quality tutor for your child, no matter where you live.
